You can engage potential clients and others in your network online by creating an effective Instagram account. While creating a visually appealing and branded grid is important, what matters more is engagement. There are a number of ways that you can increase engagement, and ultimately increase the reputation and exposure of your business online.

What is engagement on Instagram?

Engagement on Instagram measures the number of people that saw your post compared to the number of actions that were taken. There are a number of ways that engagement is measured, including:

  • Comments

  • Click-throughs

  • Shares

  • Branded hashtags

  • Saves

  • Mentions (tagged or untagged)

  • Followers and growth

  • Likes

  • DMs

Effective ways to increase engagement on Instagram

Here is a list of tips you can use to increase engagement on your Instagram account:

Tell a story- While the type of visuals you post is important, focusing on telling a story via your captions, videos, stories, and profile is an effective way to increase engagement. Telling a story is likely to make your account more memorable, as it helps to foster connection and experience with your brand.

Create saveable content- Creating informational posts that your followers are likely to save can help you increase engagement. Quotes and attractive graphics can also inspire your followers to save your post.

Initiate conversations- Just as you wouldn’t wait for someone to approach you at a party to start talking, you can reach out to others to encourage interactions on the platform. Start your own conversations with others in your niche or potential clients to help increase the traction of your account.

Utilize Instagram stories- You can use stories to facilitate informal and conversational interactions with your audience. Be sure to show your face to help add a personal element to your message.

Learn about your audience- Review the demographics of your audience to determine the type of content to post, the tone to use, and the best times to launch your post. Making great content is a lot easier once you realize who will see it.

Create and share relatable memes- Different memes can resonate with almost any audience. Create funny, interactive, and relatable memes for more likes, saves, shares, and comments on your posts.

Respond to questions, comments, and DMs- Be sure to interact with the comments and messages you get on your posts. Engaging your followers in conversation makes them feel seen and heard, and excited to connect with you again in the future.

Create awesome captions- You can add up to 2200 characters in an Instagram caption, so be sure to create your own story. Elaborating on the image, sharing info about an event or your business, and adding context to your post can help others learn more about you, connect with your business, and engage with your account.

Use relevant hashtags- Hashtags are a great way to increase exposure by showing your post in multiple locations on the platform. You can add up to 30 hashtags to a post.

Collaborate with others in your industry- Invite someone to collaborate on a post or reel, so they can share the content with their followers.

Create carousel posts- Carousel posts allow you to post 10 images or videos in a single post. You can get creative with the way you utilize this feature.

Add CTAs to your captions- Adding a CTA or asking a direct question in your captions invites your audience to take an action or post a comment. You can also encourage your followers to click a link in your bio to drive traffic to your site and increase engagement rates.

Post video content- Videos are both eye-catching and engaging and typically receive much higher engagement than other types of posts.

Use Instagram stories stickers- One of the most engaging uses of stickers is the question sticker. Consider using them to host an “Ask me anything” session on your stories.
