Building Relationships with EAPs to Gain Referrals for Your Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center
EAPs (employee assistance programs) provide employees with short-term counseling services to help overcome the challenges they face. Business owners can work with EAPs to promote wellness for employees and their immediate families. As EAPs work in different sectors, they make referrals to service providers with more extensive and specialized services, including drug and alcohol rehab programs. Developing relationships with EAPs means they may refer clients directly to you.
Services provided by EAPs
EAPs provide services that address a number of different issues, including:
Personal difficulties
Substance abuse
Job stress
Balancing work and family
Relationship difficulties
Eldercare, childcare, parenting difficulties
Harassment
Family violence
Separation and loss
Financial or legal
How EAP referrals work
When workplaces offer support from EAPs, employees access services in one of three ways:
Self-referral: The employee seeks the services themselves
Informal referral: A supervisor, friend, or colleague makes the referral
Formal referral: A supervisor recommends the referral based on job performance
Employees work with an agent to assess and overcome any issues. These agents often make referrals to community resources: companies in their network of trusted providers.
How to become an EAP provider
Each EAP has its own set of rules and regulations and varying application processes. In general, the stipulations typically include maintaining liability coverage and having appropriate licensing. They may also require an active CAQH profile and individual NPI number.
To become a provider, seek the EAPs you are interested in working with, find their application information online, and make your submission. You can also do some research into each provider to assess the types of service providers they work with and read any provider handbooks available.
Before reaching out to EAPs, it is beneficial to define your niche and begin to cultivate relationships.
