Root the Fruit: The Future of Addiction Treatment Lies Within Our Data
NAATP & FoRSE’s Measured-Based Practice System for Addiction Treatment Outcomes
The future of addiction treatment lies within our data.
Thanks to Dr. Nick Hayes for joining our May' Masterminds' discussion on NAATP's FoRSE program. We explored how the success of our treatment facilities and the wider behavioral health sector relies heavily on data. To advocate effectively for our services to payers, it's crucial that we provide valuable data—or else, value-based care remains just talk.

About FoRSE
Cumberland Heights is the first provider in the Foundation for Recovery Science and Education (FoRSE) addiction treatment outcomes program through the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP). Participating providers agree to send a set of de-identified data describing the characteristics of the people they serve and the services they provide, as well as patient-reported outcome measures of substance use and mental health symptoms, quality of life, and other aspects of wellness.
For years, our industry has echoed buzzwords like "value-based care," "outcomes measures," and "data-informed decisions." Yet, it's time to put our data where our mouth is. As providers, it falls upon us to seize this opportunity, propel the needle forward, and advocate for the efficacy of our services to payers.
With the FoRSE program, participating providers actively contribute to FoRSE Data Sites, receiving annual reports from the organization. This allows them to benchmark their outcomes against nationwide aggregated data.
The Goals
Measurement: Developing cutting-edge, dynamic measurement tools and procedures that increase our ability to monitor patient change.
Technology Accelerants: Leveraging smart devices and data science to create support systems for those recovering from SUD.
Partnerships: Working with researchers, providers, payers, and technology experts to support our mission.
Root the Fruit
The saying goes: you've got to lay the groundwork before you can reap the rewards.
Historically, treatment facilities have encountered barriers when trying to improve their data collection processes, often due to concerns about privacy, financial constraints, and the complexity of implementation.
Questions arise:
How do we gather data without compromising patient privacy?
What's the budget for this endeavor?
Where do we even begin?
Is investing in this initiative truly worthwhile?
The ‘Golden Corral’
These hurdles can make the path forward seem daunting. That’s where FoRSE comes in. This outcomes repository is a no-cost resource available to all addiction and mental health treatment centers nationwide.
Here, data collection is impartial - no personal records are disclosed. This flexibility allows you to engage at your comfort level: take what's useful, and disregard the rest.
In summary, the future of addiction treatment will be personalized and precise. By employing measurement markers, professionals can objectively track treatment progress, moving away from subjective opinions.
These practices will bolster our capacity to:
Enhance access to recovery.
Support processes that will improve our programs and communicate with external stakeholders.
In essence, the future of addiction treatment is rooted in our ability to harness the power of data.
