Discussion Recap
“At the end of the day, the best predictor of outcomes is not where someone went to treatment or what modality was used; it’s the length of engagement.” - Dr. Sam MacMaster.
Defining success and value in behavioral health care requires a multifaceted approach; speaking with Cigna/Evernorth helped us understand where most insurance companies stand, which is putting the onus on providers to determine outcomes.
We may be years away from standardizing how to measure success, but we can’t let analysis paralysis prevent us from starting; we can’t let perfect get in the way of good.
The Aim:
Stay connected with patients for at least one year, regardless of sobriety status.
The How:
Peer Coaching - patients should be able to connect with someone they know.
Keep it simple: 8 -10 questions
Consider incentivizing patients with tokens/gift cards for participating
Celebrate the wins - show them why their involvement matters
Resources:
National Outcome Measures (NOMs)
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP)
